SHS Academics

Our academic program seeks, above all else, to provide each student with the best learning experience we can offer and prepare them for future success. To this effect, we are working diligently to align our curriculum in English and mathematics to the increased rigor of the Common Core standards. In addition to strong core academics, we offer various programs of study to allow students to further explore and discover desired career specialties. Our special education programs and AP classes provide additional resources to engage student learning according to their individual needs.

Although our primary goal is to provide quality education and resources for success to each student, we are proud to say this goal has the effect of producing many high-performance students. Sheridan High School has been listed twice as a National Silver Award winner by the US News and World Report, and the ACT has recognized our school in its publication Rigor at Risk. We typically have at least 20 students each year become AP Scholars.

We believe that achievement in assessment results is not a goal in itself, but rather a measure of how well we are reaching each student. As such, we are working to achieve 90% proficiency in the areas of mathematics and reading.

Another significant measure of preparing our students to become productive members of society is our graduation rate. Through additional attention and innovation, we have grown our graduation rate to 86%, up from 76.9% in 2008. Our efforts to keep students in school include Individualized Learning Plans, weekly grade reviews, graduation coaches and weekly efforts by school counselors to identify students who may require additional resources to realize success. We are working to reach and sustain a 90% graduation rate, and are proud to be part of  Next Level, an initiative that seeks community partnership to help more students graduate.
