Welcome to the Orchestra webpage for Sheridan County School District #2!

The Elementary Orchestra program provides students an opportunity to learn to play a string instrument!

Students in first through third grade are taught the violin using the “Suzuki Method.” This is an approach that emphasizes good listening skills and proper playing techniques before note reading.

Students in fourth and fifth grade will begin note reading and learning orchestra skills. They are exposed to classical music as well as popular tunes and develop skills to play individually as well as in a group. In these grades, students can choose their instrument: violin, viola, or cello.

On this webpage you will find information on what we are learning in orchestra class, important dates and upcoming events, and forms that can be filled out. You will also find video links to the pieces we practice in class so your student can listen and practice at home!

If you want information about the After School Orchestra program, please see our After School Orchestra page.

Instrument Rental Information

On Thursday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m. there will be a meeting at the auditorium in the Early Building at SJHS (on Lewis Street) regarding instrument rental.

Various dealers will be available to explain their instrument rental program with you and you will be able to leave with an instrument that night if you choose to do so.

While the schools have instruments available to use, these numbers are limited and are for use at school only.

Please note that renting an instrument is not mandatory and is not necessary if your child is just trying an instrument for the first time.  They are welcome to use the school instruments at school during their class time.

However, if your child is planning on participating in the After School Orchestra program (2nd-5th grades only) an instrument is required for that activity.  This is because rehearsal is held at the Jr. High and extra practice will be needed.

If you are unable to attend the meeting but would still like to rent an instrument, please refer to the Rental Information Form or contact your student’s teacher for more information.
