Our drive to prepare every student with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for success begins early through our two kindergarten programs. However, there are a variety of things parents can do to help their children be ready to enter kindergarten and achieve a higher level of success. In addition to general  readiness skills, there are specific skills in both math and literacy that are recommended for children entering kindergarten.

Children entering kindergarten are placed into one of two programs: Kindergarten or Classic Kindergarten. Placement is dependent on each child’s readiness and skill level, and you will find below a more detailed description of each program.

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten program runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. with breaks for two recesses and lunch. This program is specifically designed to address new, more rigorous academic state standards for Kindergarten in Wyoming. The Kindergarten program may have up to 19 students per classroom. The Kindergarten teacher provides enrichment opportunities, such as art, music, and physical education. Kindergarten students go home on an earlier bus “run” than students in grades 1-5, giving them a slightly shorter day and a more carefree (Kindergarten only) bus ride home.

Classic Kindergarten

SCSD#2 recognized that some students were entering Kindergarten without the necessary skills to be successful in the more demanding Kindergarten curriculum. In response to this situation, Classic Kindergarten was created to provide the specific learning experiences needed to have success in Kindergarten. The curriculum for Classic Kindergarten provides learning in all areas of development (cognitive, emotional, physical, and social) and provides instruction at the child’s level in literacy and mathematics. The schedule for Classic Kindergarten is also 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. with two recesses and lunch; busing is provided (as this program is centralized at one school in our district).

Classic Kindergarten is not a pre-K curriculum, nor is it intended as a substitute for the Kindergarten year. After a year in Classic Kindergarten, the student will be prepared to enter Kindergarten.

Enrollment in Classic Kindergarten is determined by screening provided by SCSD#2. Class size is less than that in Kindergarten to provide more individual support to students.
