Session Description:

Discussed a good book lately? This session will begin with the implementation of Literature Discussion Groups, including student choice to guide text selection and integration of technology. Modeling, comprehension strategies, the Gradual Release of Responsibility, and Close Reading are all key components that will be incorporated into this session to promote higher level thinking skills. Participants will analyze shifts necessary to meet the specific needs of students in conjunction with the demands of the CCSS. Theory will be connected to practice as resources and videos are shared to promote easy implementation, while ensuring cohesive instruction within the Reading and Writing Workshops.

Speaker Bios:

Keri is currently a 5th grade teacher at Meadowlark Elementary in Sheridan.  She began her teaching career in 1998 teaching 2nd grade in Texas.  She taught 4 years of 2nd grade and then moved up to 5th grade.  In 2005, she moved to Sheridan and began her teaching career here.  All of her years teaching have been focused on all subject areas.  Her love for kids and learning keeps her teaching today.

Kaelee Saner is in her sixth year of teaching, three of which have been in fifth grade and three in fourth grade.  She completed her masters in Literacy Education, with an emphasis on vocabulary instruction within the classroom.  Literacy in the classroom is her passion!

Jessica Morgan has spent her 11 years of teaching in Sheridan, Wyoming working with 4th and 5th grade students.  Prior to Wyoming she worked at various positions within the South Dakota school system.  Jessica enjoys teaching reading and loves the challenge of getting “non”readers into a good book that they just can’t put down.
